SUMMARY:3Peaks Challenge: 45th edition
DESCRIPTION:The annual UCT GSB 3Peaks Challenge is happening on Sunday\, 3rd November 2024. This year marks the 45th anniversary of this proud tradition\, which has been an integral part of our school’s spirit since its inception in 1979. \nThe 3Peaks Challenge takes participants on an exhilarating journey – climbing Devil’s Peak\, Maclear’s Beacon\, and finally\, Lion’s Head. Whether you’re an avid hiker or simply looking for a fun and memorable experience\, there’s something for everyone – those preferring a shorter route are welcome to join as well. The event will conclude with a celebratory braai at The Brig\, commemorating your successful completion of the 3Peaks Challenge. \nFor the first time\, we’re introducing a points-based scoring system\, where every participant’s performance will contribute to their class’s overall score. While those who run the fastest or cover the greatest distance will earn the highest points\, every finisher will play a key role in boosting their class’s tally. \nWe anticipate this new team-based format will inspire some friendly competition amongst business school alumni\, with plenty of opportunities to strategise and maximise your class’s chances of winning! \nMore than just a physical feat\, this event is about community\, camaraderie and creating lasting memories with fellow alumni and current students. Plus\, you’ll have the unique bragging rights of having participated in the 45th UCT GSB 3Peaks Challenge! \n\nCost of entry: free\nStart: 06h10\nStarting location: Kopano parking lot\, UCT middle campus See on Google Maps\nBrig braai: 12h00 – 15h00\n\nRSVP\nDon’t miss out on being part of this extraordinary tradition. SUMMARY:GSB roundtable discussion: SA Budget 2023
DESCRIPTION:GSB Alumni Relations event \nPlease join us online for our roundtable discussion as we tackle the 2023 budget speech by South Africa’s Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana. This roundtable discussion will be led by UCT GSB’s Associate Professor Sean Gossel and Associate Professor Richard Calland (Associate Professor of Public Law\, UCT) and will be moderated by UCT GSB’s Dr Thanti Mthanti (Senior Lecturer). \nThis discussion will look at what Godongwana’s speech will have covered in his budget policy statement\, which comes during a national energy crisis (load shedding)\, rising interest rates and petrol prices. We want to know: Will this budget be a u-turn on fiscal consolidation\, a cul-de-sac of impossible political promises\, a detour into disastrous populism\, or a steady drive to economic reform? \nSpeakers: Assoc. Prof. Sean Gossel\, UCT GSB; Assoc. SUMMARY:GSB roundtable discussion: Marketing for the future – why today's best practices need to change
DESCRIPTION:GSB Alumni Relations event \nAccording to Prof. John Deighton (Harvard Business School\, US)\, there is more to marketing than communication – but not much more. So when the media of communication changes\, marketing changes. The pace of change has been extraordinarily fast since the birth of the internet. We have had to re-skill to use websites\, email\, texting like WhatsApp and Twitter\, social media\, new search options besides Google\, algorithmic media like TikTok and YouTube\, and\, before long\, Web3.  \nThese new marketing media talk in many directions – marketers talk to consumers\, consumers talk back\, consumers talk to each other\, and creators talk to anyone prepared to listen. The idea that the brand controls the conversation is quaint today to everyone except those myopic marketers who think that what their ads and PR say is what the market hears.  \nBesides this messaging mayhem\, the functions of marketing that are not communication-centric are also changing. Distributors used to exploit scarcity; now they must fight abundance. Digital content can be streamed; physical content can be “Amazoned“ or “Shopified“. No marketing leader can be confident that they control the path to purchase today. \nIn this roundtable\, the panel will explore – and debate with the audience – the best practices of today’s marketing. \nSpeakers: Prof. John Deighton\, Professor of Business Administration Emeritus\, Harvard Business School (GSB MBA ’72)  | Dr Caitlin Ferreira\, acting MBA Programme Director UCT GSB and senior lecturer | Alex Pryor (GSB MBA ’09)\, Head of Digital Innovation EOH and senior lecturer | Moderator: Kosta Kontos (GSB MBA 09/10)\, Chairperson UCT GSB Alumni Board \nRead more \nRegister here: https://www.gsb.uct.ac.za/event/register/224/marketing-for-the-future-why-today’s-best-practices-need-to-change

SUMMARY:GSB Alumni Reunion Weekend 2021: "Knowledge across disciplines"
DESCRIPTION:The annual GSB Alumni Reunion Weekend is coming up. Join the UCT GSB 2021 Alumni Reunion Weekend in October to hear expert speakers discuss how to remain relevant while navigating uncertainty under the theme “Knowledge across disciplines”. Save the date! \nAnnual Alumni Reunion Weekend to delve into how leaders are responding to global challenges with a multi-disciplined approach \nOrganisations the world over are increasingly facing challenges to their growth and sustainability. Understanding multiple areas and how they connect is critical when working towards solutions that address current and future challenges. Complex problems are rarely solved by a one-dimensional approach. They require skill sets that cross disciplines and build on combined knowledge. The interplay between the different disciplines and the rapid adoption of new technology and approaches in the workplace requires intentionality\, perseverance\, and increasingly\, the need for relevance. \nBut what does this mean in practice and how are companies affected\, both across Africa and globally? \nJoin the UCT GSB 2021 Alumni Reunion Weekend in October to hear faculty\, alumni and industry discuss their response to these exponential changes and the challenges they bring\, and what this means for optimising business functions and achieving goals with a clear purpose while navigating ongoing uncertainty. \nThis year’s event will once again be held virtually\, enabling alumni from all over the world to gather and connect with each other. Dr Catherine Duggan\, director of the UCT GSB\, will kick things off on Friday 22 Oct at 16:00 with a welcome speech updating alumni on developments at the UCT GSB. SUMMARY:22nd Annual UCT GSB Women in Business Conference 2021 | Coding heart into the economy: Turning empathy into innovation
DESCRIPTION:To find a way forward in these unpredictable and volatile times\, it is not enough to know. We need also to feel and listen. \nToday\, the most powerful brands are turning empathy into innovation and human connection and authenticity into growth. They’re putting human experience first; they’re knitting humanity into every aspect of business\, from product design and marketing to management and workplace culture. And they’re seeing this new respect for human needs reflected in rocketing bottom lines. \nWith the theme\, Coding Heart into the Economy\, this year’s UCT Graduate School of Business’s annual Women in Business Conference will be unpacking this seismic shift towards human-centred business and exploring the benefits of turning empathy into innovation. \nJoin other business leaders for a range of discussions led by masters of industry\, powerful businesswomen\, world-class academics\, and thought leaders. Learn how design thinking and strategy enable agility. Understand the intricate and nuanced relationship that exists between a business and its customers. Adopt fresh tools for listening to customer and employee needs. Drive innovation by asking human-centric questions. \nFor all the uncertainty out there\, one thing is becoming crystal clear: brands that ignore the human experience are brands humans ignore. \nEvent website

SUMMARY:GSB Masterclass: What stops talented people from aiming for the top jobs?
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Masterclass with Dr Babar Dharani\, senior lecturer in the Allan Gray Centre for Values-Based Leadership. \nThe reasons which stop people from aspiring for top jobs may be wide and varied; however\, when skilled people do not aim for the top job\, many observers can spot the lack of “logic” in their behaviour. While their reasons may appear “il-logical”\, the session aims to uncover the “psycho-logical” fundamentals that stop talented people from reaching their full potential. Research shows that those marginalised are disproportionately affected by this\, such as women and blacks. Our Centre’s research uncovered why this is the case. \nThe session will also share some profound enablers to support the psychological shortcomings and some “patchwork” that is quick and effective in overcoming the stumbling blocks that prevent one from unleashing one’s potential. \nRSVP here \nMore on Dr Dharani \nDr Babar Dharani joined the Allan Gray Centre for Values-Based Leadership\, GSB UCT as an Associate in 2019 and progressed to a senior lecturer position on February 1\, 2020. Before joining the GSB\, he worked for 18 years in finance. His last role was as a CFO in one of the largest diamond manufacturing companies in the world. He is a Business Finance Professional (BFP) and obtained his Fellowship of the Institute of Chartered Accountancy in England and Wales (ICAEW) while working at Deloitte in London and KPMG in Port Louis. \nHaving held leadership positions in finance in the Diamond industry\, it became increasingly apparent to him that there was a limited connection between successes and personal happiness. He researched happiness in organisations for his PhD\, and his prime area of interest in academia became Leadership Development\, focusing on Happiness and Well-Being in organisations\, for which he regards the inclusion of all talented personnel in the organisational ethos as one of the most fundamental pillars.

SUMMARY:GSB Webinars: "The critical role of integrated thinking and reporting during the current socio-economic crises" with Assoc. Prof. Mark Graham
DESCRIPTION:Integrated reporting (IR) holds businesses accountable for their impact on people and the environment\, there seems to be tremendous benefit to organisations that commit to IR and do it well. Studies have shown that companies that adopt integrated reporting practices actually outperform those that do not\, and also have more long-term investors.IR is the way of the future. It is changing the way we think about capitalism and the world of business – not in terms of how much money an organisation is making\, but what value it is creating. By getting business managers and CEOs to think about their company in terms of its sustainability. \nWe invite you to join us for a free webinar with Mark Graham\, Associate Professor at the University of Cape Town\, Graduate School of Business (UCT GSB). He is a former Head of the College of Accounting at UCT and currently teaches on the MBA\, EMBA and various Executive programmes at UCT GSB. Mark is also the current chair of the adjudicating panel for the annual EY Excellence in Integrated Reporting Awards. \nOn Wednesday\, 15 July 2020 he unpacks the critical role that integrated thinking and reporting can play during the current socio-economic crises. Quite aside from the initial objective of integrated reporting to hold businesses accountable for their impact on people and the environment\, there is tremendous benefit to organisations that commit to IR and do it well. Studies have shown that companies that adopt integrated reporting practices actually outperform those that do not\, and also have more long-term investors. \nTo attend\, RSVP here.
