SUMMARY:22nd Annual UCT GSB Women in Business Conference 2021 | Coding heart into the economy: Turning empathy into innovation
DESCRIPTION:To find a way forward in these unpredictable and volatile times\, it is not enough to know. We need also to feel and listen. \nToday\, the most powerful brands are turning empathy into innovation and human connection and authenticity into growth. They’re putting human experience first; they’re knitting humanity into every aspect of business\, from product design and marketing to management and workplace culture. And they’re seeing this new respect for human needs reflected in rocketing bottom lines. \nWith the theme\, Coding Heart into the Economy\, this year’s UCT Graduate School of Business’s annual Women in Business Conference will be unpacking this seismic shift towards human-centred business and exploring the benefits of turning empathy into innovation. \nJoin other business leaders for a range of discussions led by masters of industry\, powerful businesswomen\, world-class academics\, and thought leaders. Learn how design thinking and strategy enable agility. Understand the intricate and nuanced relationship that exists between a business and its customers. Adopt fresh tools for listening to customer and employee needs. Drive innovation by asking human-centric questions. \nFor all the uncertainty out there\, one thing is becoming crystal clear: brands that ignore the human experience are brands humans ignore. \nEvent website

SUMMARY:GSB Masterclass: What stops talented people from aiming for the top jobs?
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Masterclass with Dr Babar Dharani\, senior lecturer in the Allan Gray Centre for Values-Based Leadership. \nThe reasons which stop people from aspiring for top jobs may be wide and varied; however\, when skilled people do not aim for the top job\, many observers can spot the lack of “logic” in their behaviour. While their reasons may appear “il-logical”\, the session aims to uncover the “psycho-logical” fundamentals that stop talented people from reaching their full potential. Research shows that those marginalised are disproportionately affected by this\, such as women and blacks. Our Centre’s research uncovered why this is the case. \nThe session will also share some profound enablers to support the psychological shortcomings and some “patchwork” that is quick and effective in overcoming the stumbling blocks that prevent one from unleashing one’s potential. \nRSVP here \nMore on Dr Dharani \nDr Babar Dharani joined the Allan Gray Centre for Values-Based Leadership\, GSB UCT as an Associate in 2019 and progressed to a senior lecturer position on February 1\, 2020. Before joining the GSB\, he worked for 18 years in finance. His last role was as a CFO in one of the largest diamond manufacturing companies in the world. He is a Business Finance Professional (BFP) and obtained his Fellowship of the Institute of Chartered Accountancy in England and Wales (ICAEW) while working at Deloitte in London and KPMG in Port Louis. \nHaving held leadership positions in finance in the Diamond industry\, it became increasingly apparent to him that there was a limited connection between successes and personal happiness. He researched happiness in organisations for his PhD\, and his prime area of interest in academia became Leadership Development\, focusing on Happiness and Well-Being in organisations\, for which he regards the inclusion of all talented personnel in the organisational ethos as one of the most fundamental pillars.

SUMMARY:21st Annual UCT GSB Women in Business Conference
DESCRIPTION:This year the UCT Graduate School of Business (UCT GSB) 21st Annual Women in Business Conference is coming to you. \nWherever you are in the world\, whether you’re back in the office\, or working from home in your pyjamas\, join our virtual conversation on 21 August as we celebrate the resilience\, strength and perseverance required of women in business today. This year’s theme is RISE and our speaker line-up includes Unilever’s Mechell Chetty\, Suzanne Ackerman-Berman of Pick n Pay\, Rajes Pillay of Discovery\, ABSA’s Ntwani Shilubane\, David Scott of RCL Foods\, and the UCT GSB’s Director of Executive Education\, Kumeshnee West. \nInclusive workspaces are still in short supply in 2020 and gender disparity continues to limit access to leadership roles for women. We’ll be looking into how to address this as we hear the inspiring stories of women who have been successful while setting the bar for accessibility to more women. We’ll also explore sustainable economic growth and the role of women empowerment in driving its success. \nImportantly\, we’ll be raising funds for financially excluded women to have the opportunity to study at the UCT GSB. Join us on 21 August to learn from people who are making meaningful changes in business\, and be part of our mission to break down the barriers and stereotypes limiting women from realising their potential. \nFollow our UCT GSB social media channels to keep up with updates on this exciting event. #RiseWithUCTGSB #WomenInBusiness #WIB2020 \nEvent website | View programme

SUMMARY:GSB Webinars: "The critical role of integrated thinking and reporting during the current socio-economic crises" with Assoc. Prof. Mark Graham
DESCRIPTION:Integrated reporting (IR) holds businesses accountable for their impact on people and the environment\, there seems to be tremendous benefit to organisations that commit to IR and do it well. Studies have shown that companies that adopt integrated reporting practices actually outperform those that do not\, and also have more long-term investors.IR is the way of the future. It is changing the way we think about capitalism and the world of business – not in terms of how much money an organisation is making\, but what value it is creating. By getting business managers and CEOs to think about their company in terms of its sustainability. \nWe invite you to join us for a free webinar with Mark Graham\, Associate Professor at the University of Cape Town\, Graduate School of Business (UCT GSB). He is a former Head of the College of Accounting at UCT and currently teaches on the MBA\, EMBA and various Executive programmes at UCT GSB. Mark is also the current chair of the adjudicating panel for the annual EY Excellence in Integrated Reporting Awards. \nOn Wednesday\, 15 July 2020 he unpacks the critical role that integrated thinking and reporting can play during the current socio-economic crises. Quite aside from the initial objective of integrated reporting to hold businesses accountable for their impact on people and the environment\, there is tremendous benefit to organisations that commit to IR and do it well. Studies have shown that companies that adopt integrated reporting practices actually outperform those that do not\, and also have more long-term investors. \nTo attend\, RSVP here.

SUMMARY:GSB Webinars: "The future of money and what it means for business and society facing uncertainty" with Simon Dingle
DESCRIPTION:We humanity face the greatest challenges and opportunities we have ever faced. Mars is within reach\, while on Earth our life-support system is under threat. Whether living under coronavirus quarantine\, in an informal settlement\, an overcrowded city or a base on the Moon or Mars our requirements are the same: including shelter\, power\, water\, food and communication systems to keep in touch with each other. Sadly billions of us already live without adequate access to these basic resources and that was before the toll of the pandemic. \nThe world is facing many changes and uncertainties as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Our lives and livelihoods are largely impacted and vulnerable due to this uncertainty. Our speaker\, Simon Dingle\, has had first-hand experiencing working with Bitcoin and blockchain technologies since 2011. He has led product development at three global fintech start-ups and is the author of “In Math We Trust: The future of money”. \nWe invite you to join us for a free webinar with Simon Dingle on Wednesday\, 10 June 2020 as he unpacks the impact which COVID-19 has on the future of money. What could be done to minimize some of the imminent financial risks? This talk will look at what it means for business and society facing uncertainty and how to secure wealth in a post pandemic economy. \n  \nTo attend\, RSVP here

SUMMARY:GSB Webinars: "Coronavirus – the broader economic implications" with Prof. Barry Standish
DESCRIPTION:The potential economic and financial impact of COVID-19 is likely to be dramatic and far-reaching\, however\, to date\, there has been little consideration of the broader economic implications of this crisis. \nWe’d like to invite you to join us for a free webinar with Barry Standish on Wednesday\, 15 April that will delve more deeply into this important topic. \nBarry will take us through his unique analysis of the situation\, arguing that the economic impact of the pandemic cannot be seen in isolation from both short trends in local and international economies and existing structural weaknesses in international economies. \nThe webinar will position the rise of the pandemic in the context of the 2019 economic landscape and will compare the key features of this crisis to those of other recent economic crises. The discussion will close by considering the economic implications of potential policy options. \nBarry is director and partner of the consulting company StratEcon\, a specialised economics consultancy with economic modelling as the core competency. He is also is visiting Professor of Economics at the Rotterdam School of Management\, Erasmus University in the Netherlands and was formally a senior economist at the UCT Graduate School of Business. \nTo attend\, RSVP here.

SUMMARY:Alumni Talk: Rethinking equality – cry our beloved unequal country
DESCRIPTION:Recently South Africa lit up social media again when a photograph by UCT Masters student Johnny Miller made the front cover of Time magazine. Miller started his Unequal Scenes project and research in 2016\, and in the Time interview states that “South Africa was so ruthlessly and effectively segregated during apartheid\, I just had an idea that by seeing it from the air it would help make that hit home. That the architecture itself is a dividing factor.” \nWhat can we do in the social innovation\, systems change and higher education sectors to address this? How can we address inequality\, compassionately and effectively? Are we doing enough to bring about equality for all? Join the GSB’s Alumni Relations and Bertha Centre departments as they host the second event in their Rethinking series. \nSpeakers will include Mayra Hartman; a Bertha Scholar\, GSB MBA Alumnus who conducted her Master’s dissertation research on the South African affordable housing sector. She will be joined by Lorenzo Davids the CEO of Community Chest\, a GSB MPhil candidate and someone who has worked in the social and civic organisations space for decades. They will be in conversation with the Bertha Centre’s Acting Director Bulelwa Makalima-Ngewana. Bulelwa is the former CEO of the Cape Town Partnership and a town planner with extensive experience in managing and coordinating public-private partnerships for area-based management. \nVisit the event website for more information or RSVP directly here.
