Epic #1 – The Absa Cape Epic 2017
Mervyn Christoffels, GSB MOD MBA ’06, is riding the Absa Cape Epic, one the toughest mountain bike races in the world, using this opportunity to raise funds for scholarships.
“This idea has been with me for some time, to find a way to help sponsor students to complete an MBA,” says Mervyn. The challenging marathon stage race runs over eight days, 691 km, 15,400 m of climbing, untamed and was described by a former winner as the “Tour de France of mountain biking”. Over 600 international teams compete in this race.
Mervyn completed his MBA in 2006 and accredits his studies at the GSB to transforming his life and career, shaping his thinking, maximising his impact and empowering him to become a change agent. “From the initial idea of riding the Absa Cape Epic and fundraising for the GSB Foundation, the Epic Scholarship was born. We can now offer fellow GSB alumni who undertake an epic journey, like this race, a platform to raise funds and contribute towards a scholarship that will help a deserving candidate complete an MBA.”
“I will be riding the Absa Cape Epic with my team partner Grant Goodwin, and similar to the aim of this fundraiser, we will go further with the support of others.”
I invite everyone to support us in this endeavour and donate generously.

About the campaign
The Epic Scholarship was launched in 2017 by Mervyn Christoffels riding the Cape Epic that year. The Epic Scholarship serves as platform for GSB Alumni who want to link a personal epic challenge with fundraising towards scholarships. It aims to persuade as many alumni as possible to show their support of such endeavours by donating generously. Proceeds from these fundraisers will be awarded to deserving GSB students.
Donations to the GSB Foundation are tax deductible for South African taxpayers. Donors from other countries could also be eligible for tax benefits, see here for details.
