Please join us online for our roundtable discussion as we tackle the 2023 budget speech by South Africa’s Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana. This roundtable discussion will be led by UCT GSB’s Associate Professor Sean Gossel and Associate Professor Richard Calland (Associate Professor of Public Law, UCT) and will be moderated by UCT GSB’s Dr Thanti Mthanti (Senior Lecturer).
This discussion will look at what Godongwana’s speech will have covered in his budget policy statement, which comes during a national energy crisis (load shedding), rising interest rates and petrol prices. We want to know: Will this budget be a u-turn on fiscal consolidation, a cul-de-sac of impossible political promises, a detour into disastrous populism, or a steady drive to economic reform?
